Characters
Nerida (name meaning: mermaid language: greek): Nerida seems like a normal sixteen year old girl on the outside, but her past reveals that she may not be so normal after all. Weird happenings in her childhood, a mom lost at sea, and a natural swimming ability that is so good it almost seems unnatural. When Nerida discovered she was a mermaid, she had to adapt quickly and learn lots about a world underwater that was in lots of trouble. Drawing the power from the ocean, Nerida is able to come off as confident, but really (especially after being given a prophecy and a task she must complete) she has an internal struggle of asking herself why she is the one chosen to be important.
Misty: Misty becomes Nerida's best friend once Nerida is introduced to the mermaid world. She takes Nerida under her roof and teaches her everything she wanted to know. Misty always seems happy and cheerful, and is known for bringing joy everywhere she goes. She chooses to be bright, wearing her hair silver with streaks of pastel colors in it. However, despite her reputation, Misty has a dark side. She is a skilled fighter and will not hesitate to take down anyone who messes with the people she loves and she isn't scared to stand up for what she believes in.
Una (name meaning: white wave language: welsh): Una is the queen of the mermaids. After her first few years of ruling the ocean, she decided to go and live on the land. It was then that she met Nerida's father and fell in love with him, eventually marrying him and having a child. She knew that Nerida was a mermaid from the very beginning. When Nerida was 15, her mother was called back to the ocean to try and deal with the mess that Ceto was causing. Still keeping the mermaid secret from her family, she returned to the ocean by getting "lost at sea." She regrets some of her decisions that she made, but always tries to do what is best for her daughter and her husband in the end.
Ceto (name meaning: goddess of the sea language: greek): Ceto is the villain of the series and calls herself the siren queen. While her "species" is in between the royal mermaids and the others, she is certainly as powerful as the queen herself. Ceto feels like all mermaids should have the right to use their powers for evil, like in older myths where mermaids sunk ships and tricked men and overall weren't the nicest of creatures. Ceto has tried many times to take over the kingdom. Her biggest goal is to rule the ocean with her army of "sirens." She tries to get non-royal mermaids to take her side by telling them that they are treated unfairly by the the royals and the queen.
Royal Mermaids: The royal mermaids are the species of mermaids that are somehow related to the goddess Atargatis. There are so many generations of them that they aren't necessarily considered to all be related, but have become more of their own species. The royals make up probably about a third of the mermaid population. These mermaids are different because they look closer to humans, their top half almost 100% human looking. These mermaids also have the power to transform into a human and walk on land. Within this group of mermaids, there is the royal family, which is the mermaids directly descended from the goddess. It is also the family the rules the sea. Nerida and her mother are part of that family.
Other Mermaids: These are the regular (non-royal) mermaids in the ocean. They have all the same abilities as the royal mermaids besides the fact that they cannot change into a human and they look different. These mermaids do not look as much like people as the royals do. Because the royals are somehow descended from the goddess, they look more human. These mermaids do not. They have scales over their entire body, different hair, and gills and such so that they can fully live underwater.
Sirens: The sirens are not actually sirens, as sirens in mythology were bird/woman creatures that got confused with mermaids over time, but a siren is rather any mermaid that has decided to follow Ceto.
